The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui
historical gangster parade
Translated by:: Báthori Csaba
Arturo Ui is a second-rate gangster in 1930s America. The press doesn't even bother to report on his crimes anymore, they just write about the financial crisis that's plaguing his gang. Soon, however, Ui learns some compromising information about Doughsborough, a politician renowned for his honesty, who has succumbed to temptation and got involved in shady dealings with the Cauliflower Trust. Ui threatens to expose Doughsborough if the politician refuses to back him. The gangster turns his gang into a corrupt protection scheme through which Ui gains power and prestige. He wishes to become a persuasive politician whose strength lies in his oratorical skills and visionary personality. As Ui's greed and lust for power grows, the means he uses to achieve his goal become increasingly violent. Following his success in Chicago he raises the bar and wants to expand into the neighboring town of Cicero.
