Friedrich Dürrenmatt
Romulus the Great
(tragi)comedy
The fate of the empire is already decided. If something has outgrown its ambitions, it is its fate to fail. What can the last Roman emperor do in such a situation? Waits patiently, breeds chickens and sells his odds and ends, the useless remnants of the historical display, once nursed as civilization. “My political discretion is idleness”- confesses the buffoon, and tells off politics as well. A bitter comedy, its actuality can be caught in its timelessness, an often repeated (dramatic) situation, where the era overwrites man himself.
