The Seventh Stair
Stories after Hrabal
In our play, we would like to activate the love for life that lights the whole life work of Hrabal. We didn't adapt just one play by the author, instead we took some themes from his well-known novels and short stories, and, by improvisation, we created a Hrabalesque story, one that is still our own, or even better said, an interactive happening, into which we will try to involve the audience, too, as much as possible.
We did it like this because, from our experience, we think that the richness and chattering of Hrabal's works, the quirkiness of his stories can not be forced into a boring linear narrative. These stories will only really open up if we keep their unique flexibility. During the rehearsals, we also noticed that we can only be true to hrabal if, like him, we too observe the world's absurdity in ourselves and our immediate surroundings, but also the beauty that lies within it. This is why we couldn't (and wouldn't) keep ourselves from puttin a bit of our own lives into the play.
