Bertolt Brecht
The Caucasian Chalk Circle
drama
Translated by:: Ungár Júlia
The Caucasian Chalk Circle is one of Brecht's most significant works, still it is hardly included in the repertoire of the country's theatres. Brecht interprets the motif of the chalk circle, taken from 14th century Chinese author Li Hsing-Tao as well as the Judgement of Solomon from the perspective of the period when the Nazi troups suffered their decisive defeats.
During her pilgrimage, the heroine meets a lot of different kinds of people, but all her dramatic adventures point in the direction of one single message: coexisting, in terms of loving one another, is capable of healing the evil that has infected the world of the powerful, just like a disease. With this performance, we indend to continue the community dialogue about contemporary moral issues we have started with our very successful play Our Class.
