N. V. Gogol
The Government Inspector
Translated by:: Szilágyi Ákos, Fehér Balázs Benő
Seeking happiness while falling. Gogol's The Government Inspector is not just a dark, twisted portrait of corruption and power. The politicians of a small Russian town sense their impending doom, which begins a dance of death depicted with grotesque humour. However, in the extremes of the town leadership awaiting doomsday, we can glimpse a psychological trajectory of the modern man’s self-exculpation. Hlesztakov, a drifting traveller, is merely seeking respectability, but in this world of pretence, he soon discovers how easily the coveted respect can become the birthplace of misuse. Gogol holds up a distorted mirror to us. Then the reflection grins back at us. Then it speaks.
