Vörösmarty Mihály
Csongor and Tünde
Translated by::
190 years ago, in 1831, Mihály Vörösmarty's verse drama Csongor és Tünde was published in print. The author couldn't have seen his work played on stage in his lifetime. For almost half a century, the story of Csongor és Tünde could only be read in books. Vörösmarty's poetic language and dreamlike world posed a serious challenge to the respective theatre-maker, as the task was no less: to speak authentically about the nature of happiness, love and life. Csongor's spiritual journey becomes a theatrical articulation of the course of history, from the values of the 20th century to this day... Our protagonist is forced to confront the abuses of political, economic, and intellectual power, human pettiness, and ultimately, an increasingly empty world – just like the young generation of our time.
