Once Upon an Operetta is the title of our play, vrez similar to reality. Its leading lady and star is Honthy Hanna herself, “the last great primadonna” – as she was referred to already in her lifetime, and her story is, in a way, the story of Hungarian operetta: a series of failures, but even more successes. She had some of the best composers of the time all for herself, the likes of Kálmán Imre, Lehár Ferenc, Lajtai Lajos, Erdélyi Mihály. As she once said in 1951: “Now that I have counted, there are more than 30 plays that I had played a hundred tmes or even more. Remember! You will remember a melody, a funny scene, a little piece of carefree youth!” Well, this will be the way that we will go, from miserable childhood to stardom, through burning secrets and painful truths, but always keeping to the facts, and the genre that meant life for Honthy Hanna – operetta.
