Tersánszky Józsi Jenő

Kakuk Marci

comedy

In his picaresque novel series centered around Kakuk Marci, the Baia Mare-born author might have fulfilled his own bohemian nature and crazy desires. A children's author, a writer of fiction, a pulp author publishing under a pen-name, a translator, a dramaturgist, and a theatre organizer, Józsi Jenő Tersánszky never gave up on his dream of becoming world famous as a circus acrobat, a musical virtuoso, or perhaps an inventor. Though never recognized by world literature, one of the most important intellectual workshops of twentieth century Hungary has certainly regarded him as one of its own. As Zsigmond Móricz puts it, “never has there been a Hungarian writer who was quite so closely and sweetly familiar with this lowest stratum, the world of beggars, vagabonds, fools, and mud-dwellers as Tersánszky”. Keeping in line with this idea, our performance directs our attention to the periphery of society where Kakuk Marci's adventurous and amusingly miscellaneous journey takes him from casual work – or the avoidance thereof – to complicated love affairs, and where, despite the stiff moral order of the turn of the century, this loveable hero finds his way around under any circumstances.

The popular novel by Józsi Jenő Tersánszky will be put to the stage of Szigligeti Theatre by acclaimed Hungarian director Péter Gothár.
