I.L. Caragiale

A Lost Letter

Harag György Company, Northern Theater Satu Mare

The well-known Romanian director, Sorin Militaru, undertook, at the invitation of The Northern Theatre Satu Mare, to stage the known comedy of Caragiale, A Lost Letter, in the distribution of both companies. The play of The Harag György Company places the action in a nowadays Transylvanian Hungarian society for which text and conflicts are centered on generalities and modernity. Thus Tipătescu becomes Paliczki, Trahanache Tarhonyai, and the small Romanian provincial town is replaced with a town inhabited by Hungarians. The two performances (Romanian and Hungarian) communicate each other highlighting the political and human ambition and not least, that whatever effort we put to materialize our selfish goals our fate is decided by forces beyond our control. Does Caragiale was a visionary, or our society has remained at the same level as that of 130 years ago?
