A Barbaric Scenery
In the new performance by Nagyvárad Ensemble, scheduled to premiere on the 10th of March, costumes, sets and scenery are the work of designer Cristina Breteanu. We asked Cristina about what the scenery, the costumes and sets that appear in front of the audience will look like.
“The whole performance happens in a neutral ambience, for which I have chosen a white background, on which, during the play, symbolic elements will appear, evoking the atmosphere of the short story onto the stage.
Costumes represent three different styles. The first set of clothes that appears in the performance also emphasizes this neutrality. It's a composition that differs from the usual pattern. With this, we have tried to step out of the usual scenery, like a kind of deconstruction, using different hues of gray. The second set of costumes serves to illustrate the nightmare. Animalistic features appear on people's garments. The third set is a more complex compositiom. Each character wears a different range of colors, emphasizing their grit. The scenery – costumes ans sets alike – combine the past, the short story's time and its elements with the present, contemporary elements, materials and textures” – Cristina Breteanu
