Ferenc Molnár
Liliom / Carousel
a legend from the outskirts of the city
Translated by::
A ballad about the unspoken love between two people, dependent on each other. A song of the expulsion from Paradise. A game of fate with a man who never made a compromise, alwazs avoided the law and dull weekdays. Ferenc Molnár's bittersweet legend, with its gentle, poetic sentimentalism, amd the commonplace romanticism of clean-hearted tough guys and little servant girls in love, is one of the most-played work of Hungarian theatre.
The play is directed by János Szikora, winner of the Jászai Mari-award, general director of Vörösmarty Theatre in Székesfehérvár. He studied at the Theatre and Film Academy in Budapest, then worked for the National Theatre of Pécs. From 1980, he was an art director at the theatre of Győr, then from 1983, a director at the Natoional Theatre of Miskolc, and from 1985, general director of the newly reopened Gárdonyi Géza Theatre in Eger. From 1986, director at the Vígszínház. Between 1991–1994, art contsultant, then later director for the National Theatre of Pécs. Between 1996-1999, art director of the National Theatre of Szeged and of Szeged Open-air Festival.
